Sejak debut dan merilis mini album perdananya Sparkling Blue pada bulan Januari 2024 silam, saya dan banyak orang mungkin telah penasaran dengan TWS. Apalagi mengingat fakta mereka adalah boy grup yang didebutkan oleh PLEDIS Entertainment setelah 9 tahun lamanya setelah agensi tersebut membentuk grup SEVENTEEN. 

Adalah tugas yang berat jika Anda adalah grup baru dari sebuah agensi yang telah memiliki senior ternama di dalamnya. Itu artinya kerja keras untuk menunjukkan yang terbaik dan lepas dari bayang-bayang para senior harus pun semakin ekstra. Tetapi lewat debut mini album Sparkling Blue dan lagu debut mereka "plot twist" yang sukses mencatat prestasi membanggakan untuk ukuran grup baru, rasanya pintu kesuksesan untuk TWS telah terbuka secara alami. 

Apalagi grup ini punya semangat serta attitude yang menyenangkan. Lalu semua itu juga didukung dengan lagu-lagu yang berkualitas dan performance incredible untuk ukuran grup rookie. Lagu “plot twist” pun membawa mereka menjadi fenomena tersendiri yang kian mengukuhkan posisi TWS sebagai salah satu rookie paling diperhitungkan tahun ini.

Terdiri dari enam personil yaitu SHINYU, DOHOON, YOUNGJAE, HANJIN, JIHOON dan KYUNGMIN, TWS sendiri memiliki makna yang berarti 'TWENTY FOUR SEVEN WITH US’. Ini bentuk komitmen TWS untuk terus bersama dengan kita para pendengarnya sepanjang waktu. Yang menjadi menarik adalah TWS pun telah memiliki identitas musiknya sendiri ‘Boyhood Pop’.

Dengarkan lah lagu-lagu mereka dari debut album Sparkling Blue seperti “plot twist”, “unplugged boy”, serta “first hooky”, maka kamu akan tahu kemana arah musik TWS. Lagu mereka banyak mengingatkan kita pada semangat masa muda yang berapi-api, terkadang reckless (but that’s okay!) dan memiliki banyak mimpi. Setiap kali mendengar lagu TWS saya merasa diajak untuk kembali mengingat momen keceriaan masa muda dan berharap bisa mendengarkan lagu-lagu TWS di usia muda tersebut.

Kesuksesan debut album Sparkling Blue yang telah mencapai angka 500 ribu copies, membuat TWS tidak berpuas diri. Mereka segera kembali dengan mini album kedua bertajuk SUMMER BEAT! pada 24 Juni 2024 silam. 

Ada enam buah lagu yang berada di mini album SUMMER BEAT! Dan album ini adalah pembuktian bagi TWS untuk mencoba lebih banyak genre musik. Seperti misalnya lagu “Double Take” yang mempunyai sentuhan hip-hop serta memperlihatkan pesona TWS yang lebih fierce serta strong dari biasanya.

Dengarkan pula lagu “Keep On” yang liriknya ditulis dan di-composed oleh KENZIE. Sosok songwriter dan produser kenamaan yang namanya sudah tidak asing lagi bagi para pendengar musik K-Pop. Lagu ini membawa kita pada perasaan yang lebih hangat dengan gitar akustik dan vokal TWS yang alluring. Tak ketinggalan pre-release single "hey!hey!" yang memberi kesan positif dan promising untuk masuk ke dalam mini album SUMMER BEAT!

Maka yang menjadi highlight-nya tentu saja lagu “If I’m S, Can You Be My?” yang sempurna untuk menggambarkan keceriaan musim panas lewat irama yang cerah, funky, dan ear-catchy. Lagu tersebut juga memiliki analogi yang menarik bagai kutub utara dan selatan di magnet untuk mengekspresikan kegembiraan dalam mempelajari mengapa hal yang berlawanan dapat menarik. 

Lagu ini dengan cepat dicintai oleh para pendengarnya hingga membuat mereka mendapat 18 juta views Youtube untuk MV “If I’m S, Can You Be My?”. TWS juga berhasil mencatat tiga kemenangan dari program musik mingguan Korea lewat lewat bernada ceria ini. Good job, boys!

Dalam sesi media preview untuk perilisan mini album SUMMER BEAT!, salah satu anggota TWS yaitu HANJIN sempat menyebut album ini adalah awal dari segala perjalanan TWS. Selayaknya awal baru yang baik, Cosmo pun juga tidak sabar untuk melihat bagaimana TWS terus tumbuh di masa depan sebagai bagian dari generasi ke-lima K-Pop saat ini lewat kerja keras mereka dan genre musik Boyhood Pop andalannya. Masih ada banyak waktu untuk itu semua.

Hi, TWS selamat atas comeback terbaru kalian melalui mini album SUMMER BEAT! Album kali ini begitu mengekspresikan semangat masa muda dan musim panas yang ceria. Apakah ada sesuatu yang baru dan kalian bawa untuk album ini? 

SHINYU: Untuk mini album kedua kami yaitu SUMMER BEAT!, TWS mempersiapkan sejumlah lagu dalam berbagai genre. Lewat mini album kedua ini kami ingin menunjukkan bahwa bagi TWS, tidak batasan dalam mengekspresikan diri melalui musik.

Lagu debut TWS “plot twist” menerima begitu banyak cinta dari penggemar dan pendengar di seluruh dunia. Apakah hal tersebut menjadi pressure bagi kalian untuk comeback dengan album baru ini atau justru itu memacu kalian agar lebih sukses lagi?

YOUNGJAE: Sejak debut kami menerima begitu banyak cinta dan perhatian di luar dari yang kami bayangkan. Kami merasa bertanggung jawab untuk kembali dengan musik yang lebih baik lagi dan itu membuat kami mempersiapkan diri dengan lebih giat lagi sembari memikirkan tentang penggemar kami 42(SAI) serta orang-orang yang telah menunggu kami kembali. Pikiran tersebutlah yang memacu kami untuk mengerahkan segala usaha terbaik kami ke dalam album baru ini.

Lagu-lagu TWS dikenal dengan lirik yang positif, penuh energi muda dan melodi yang bersemangat. Kami penasaran apa yang biasanya para member TWS lakukan untuk menyemangati dirinya dan rekan satu timnya saat tengah melalui hari yang berat?

KYUNGMIN: Saya kerap mengatakan hal yang positif untuk diri saya sendiri. Misalnya kalimat seperti “Kamu pasti bisa!” dan mencoba untuk menaikkan semangat semua orang dengan meneriakkan kata-kata yang penuh semangat selama pertunjukkan agar semua orang tetap merasa bersemangat.

Semua lagu di album ini terasa begitu energik dan refreshing. Seperti apa kesan kalian saat pertama kali mendengar lagu "If I’m S, Can you Be My N?"?

DOHOON: Saat pertama kali mendengar lagu ini bersama-sama, kami semua langsung setuju bagaimana lagu ini punya melodi yang catchy dan luar biasa. Kami merasa lagu ini ditakdirkan untuk menjadi lead single dari album kali ini. 

Apa lagu favorit kalian di mini album kedua SUMMER BEAT!? Serta menurut kalian mana lagu yang akan paling disukai oleh 42(SAI)?

HANJIN: Saya rasa para 42(SAI) akan menyukai lead single kami yang punya melodi catchy yaitu "If I’m S, Can You Be My N?". Saya sendiri apabila harus memilih satu lagu favorit dari album ini maka pilihan saya adalah “Keep On”. Lagu ini seperti menggambarkan adegan berjalan pulang bersama saat matahari terbenam, sambil saling menyemangati dan menyadari pentingnya satu sama lain. Narator menggambarkan sya sebagai 'Matahari' dan orang lain sebagai 'Barat', yang secara sentimental menggambarkan bahwa ‘Kamu (Barat) adalah tujuan saya (Matahari).

Jika kita melihat koreografi dari setiap lagu TWS, semuanya terlihat begitu ceria, enerjik tetapi juga complicated. Contohnya lagu “hey! hey!”, ada begitu banyak gerakan kaki yang cepat dan gerakan tangan yang sinkron. Apakah kalian juga memiliki kesulitan tersendiri saat mempelajari koreo di album ini? Serta ada pesan bagi penggemar yang ingin mencoba gerakan koreo dari grup kalian?

JIHOON: Bagian chorus dari pre-release single kami “hey! hey!” sangat menantang karena ada gerakan meluncur yang harus tepat serta melibatkan gerakan mendorong kaki dari tanah. Kami mengalami beberapa kesulitan untuk menyinkronkan gerakan ini, tetapi kami berhasil melakukannya! Saran dari saya adalah meskipun gerakan kaki itu penting, namun mengerahkan kekuatan pada tubuh bagian atas juga dapat membantu kamu dalam melakukan gerakan ini secara lebih efektif.

Tidak mudah dikenal sebagai “adik” SEVENTEEN. Tetapi Cosmo rasa kalian berhasil membawa warna tersendiri di industri musik. Untuk TWS sendiri, apa kekuatan serta daya tarik terbesar kalian sebagai sebuah grup?

SHINYU: Menurut saya, TWS adalah grup yang mewujudkan ketulusan dan kejujuran. Saya percaya bahwa kualitas ini adalah kekuatan dan daya tarik kami.

Karier kalian baru saja dimulai. Seperti apa TWS ingin dikenal serta diingat oleh orang-orang? Lalu apa mimpi terbesar yang ingin kalian raih sebagai sebuah grup?

DOHOON: Di atas segalanya, saya berharap bisa dilihat sebagai sebuah grup yang selalu berkembang dan selalu memberikan 100% di atas panggung! Kami akan bekerja keras untuk mencapainya.

Interview: TWS Brings Us the Spirit of Youth Through the 2nd Mini Album SUMMER BEAT! & Talks About Their Charm As a Group

TWS journey in the music industry is just getting started. The fact that they have passion, positivity, and clear goals in music are exciting factors that are ready to make them shine in the future.

They make K-Pop more colorful and fun again.

Since debuting and releasing their debut mini album Sparkling Blue in January 2024, I and many other people may have been curious about TWS. They were especially because they are a boy group that debuted by Pledis Entertainment nine years after the agency formed the group SEVENTEEN.  

It's a challenging part if you're a new group from an agency that already has a lot of big seniors in it. That means to escape the shadow of seniors and show your best, hard work must be extra than others. But with their debut mini album Sparkling Blue and their debut song “plot twist” which makes a lot of proud achievements for a new group, it feels like the door to success for TWS has naturally opened.

This group has a lively and young spirit with a great attitude. And it's all supported by their quality songs and incredible performances for a rookie. All of these big factors, slow but sure, are bringing TWS' position as one of the most popular rookie groups nowadays.

Back to TWS, the success of their debut album Sparkling Blue, which has reached 500,000 copies made them not quickly become overly satisfied. They prepared more and returned with a second mini-album titled SUMMER BEAT! on June 24, 2024 ago. 

There are six songs on the 2nd mini album SUMMER BEAT! And this album is proof for TWS to try more various music genres that are in line with their music DNA. For example, the song “Double Take” has a hip-hop touch and shows TWS's fierce and strong charm.

Another example, there's also the song “Keep On” whose lyrics were written and composed by KENZIE. A well-known songwriter and producer whose name is familiar to K-Pop music listeners. This song brings us to a warmer feeling with its acoustic guitar and TWS's alluring vocals.

We can’t miss out their pre-release single “hey! hey!”, which has an addictive beat and catchy choreography. As a pre-release single, this song gives a positive impression and promising vibes to jump into their newest album.

To top it all off, there's the song “If I’m S, Can you Be My N?” that perfectly captures the joy of summer with its bright, funky, and catchy melodies. To convey the excitement of learning how opposites attract, the song uses an interesting analogy to the north and south poles of a magnet.

The song received a lot of love from listeners, resulting in 18 million YouTube views for the MV “If I’m S, Can you Be My N?”. And that number is still counting! With that song, TWS was successful in winning three awards on Korean weekly music programs. Good job, boys!

In the media preview session for the release of the mini album SUMMER BEAT!, one of the TWS members HANJIN called this album the beginning of all TWS journeys. And like any good new beginning, Cosmo can't wait to see how TWS continues to grow in the future as part of the promising fifth generation of K-Pop through their hard work and their signature Boyhood Pop music genre. Hi TWS, congratulations on making a comeback with your latest album 2nd mini album SUMMER BEAT!. This album expresses a lot of youthful spirit and a joyful summer. Is there anything new that you prepared and brought in this album?

SHINYU: For our 2nd Mini Album SUMMER BEAT!, TWS have prepared songs in various genres! With this mini album, we wanted to show that we have no limits in what we can express through music.

TWS’s debut song “plot twist” received so much love from fans and listeners around the world. Is it a pressure to comeback with this new album or is it an encouragement for you to be even more successful?

YOUNGJAE: Since our debut song received much love and attention beyond our expectation, we felt responsible to come back with better music, and we prepared even more diligently, thinking about our fans, 42, and all those who have waited for us. This thought has spurred us to put our utmost efforts into the new album.

TWS songs are known for their positive lyrics, youthful energy, and uplifting melodies. But we wonder what are the things that TWS members do to cheer themselves and their teammates up when you're going through a rough day?

KYUNGMIN: I often say positive things to myself, like "You can do it," and I try to boost everyone's spirits by shouting words of encouragement during performances to keep everyone motivated.

All the songs on this album are energetic and refreshing. What was your impression when you first heard “If I’m S, Can you Be My N?”?

DOHOON:  When we first heard the song together, we all agreed on how incredibly catchy the melody was. We felt that this song was destined to be the lead single.

Which is your favorite song on the 2nd mini album SUMMER BEAT!? And which song do you think 42(SAI) will like the most?

HANJIN: I think for 42s, their favorite track is our catchy lead single “If I’m S, Can You Be My N?” For me, if I had to choose one favorite on this album, it'd be “Keep On”.  It depicts a scene of walking home together in the sunset, while encouraging each other and realizing each other's importance. The narrator is symbolized as the 'Sun' and the other person as the 'West,' sentimentally describing that 'you(West) are my(Sun’s) destination.'

If we look at the choreography of each TWS song, it feels so cheerful, energetic but yet complicated. The song “hey! hey!” for example, it has a lot of fast footwork and synchronized hand movements. Did you have any difficulties while learning the choreography for this album? And do you have any message for fans who want to try your group's choreography moves?

JIHOON: The chorus part of our pre-release single “hey! hey!” was particularly challenging due to the precise sliding move that involves pushing off the ground with the legs. We had some difficulties synchronizing this move, but we were able to make them work! A tip I'd like to share is that although the leg movements are important, putting strength into your upper body can help you perform the move more effectively.

It's not easy being recognized as SEVENTEEN’s younger brother. But we think TWS is bringing their own color to the music industry. For TWS itself, what is your biggest strength and charm as a group?

SHINYU: I think TWS is a group that embodies both genuineness and honesty. I believe these qualities are our strengths and our charm.

Your career has just begun. How would you like TWS to be known and remembered by people? And what is your biggest dream that you want to achieve as a group?

DOHOON: Above all, I hope we are seen as a group that shows continued growth and always gives 100% on stage! We will continue to work hard to achieve that.
